Resumen:
The amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a central player in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) since it is the only source of Amyloid β (Aβ), which forms pathologic aggregates in brains of AD individuals. Diverse mutations and duplications of APP gene are causal for a subset of early onset of familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD). Not surprisingly, the production and pathogenic effect of Aβ has been the central focus in AD field. However, accumulating evidence indicates that APP is also involved in other aspects of the pathology. In this presentation, I will discuss evidence supporting the role of APP in AD neurodegeneration, along with a short historical overview of AD research.
