Resumen:

Based on the results of a previous study developed at CINTRA, we have implemented a Hearing Conservation and Promotion Programm addressed to the young to preserve their auditory function before starting in the labour world. In Argentina, a high percentage of young people is rejected in the pre-occupational medical examination because of hearing loss, despite their not having hearing diseases. The general proposal is: 1) to know the auditory function of the adolescents of 14/15 years of age, attending the third year of high schools, who will be retested at the age of 17/18; 2) to intervene once a disorder has been detected by means of counselling, assistance and adequate medical treatment; 3) to help the young to be aware ofthe importance of good hearing to their future productivity and their quality of life; 4) to prove the validity of the extended high frequency range audiometry and the otoacoustic emissions as early predictors of the noise induced hypoausis; 5) to use new technikes to measure sound immission at the entertainment places; 6) to set up of scientific guidelines of standards and bylaws related to hearing health. The Program organization and the results of the first year are described.
