Resumen:
In the 60s the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan foresaw the end of the virtual culture and the advent of a new social organization that he named the global village. McLuhan stated ?time has ceased, space has vanished. We now live in a global village... a simultaneous happening? (1964: p.63). In the 80s Alvin Toffler defined these changes and called our social organization ?the post-industrial society? (Toffler, 1980:p.2). This author characterises society as having an enormous flow of information which forces institutions and organizations to restructure and train their members to this new reality. There is a general consensus on how vertiginous the transformations are and on the need to instruct and educate the inhabitants of this ?global society? on the new skills.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are ubiquitous in contemporary society and permeate almost all forms of human interaction. Their presence and usage have brought about changes of paradigms in many different spheres, especially in education. ICTs provide teachers with many interesting tools that can be used to improve the teaching?learning process. Some applications like the e-learning platform Moodle allow teachers to provide the students with material of different sorts, as well as to interact with them in real-time. They also allow teachers to follow the evolution of the learning process and to know the performance of each student in specific tasks. E-learning platforms (also known as a virtual learning environment (VLE)) are especially useful when teaching English. Moodle has a friendly interface which permits the implementation of different objects such as: videos, mp3s, text documents, scanned images, links to other web sites or animations which can be used to show authentic material.

Moodle offers a wide variety of tools and resources which facilitate both the learning and teaching processes. One of the main aims of this paper is to outline the main features of Moodle and its advantages in the process and design of an English (as a Second Language) course.
