Resumen:
English has undeniably established itself as a lingua franca worldwide and many academics regard this phenomenon as a departure from the notion of foreign language (EFL) towards a more complex construct, that of an international language (EIL). The notion of English as an international language is characterised by the diversity inherent in the users of the language as a means of international communication, and such diversity has in turn serious cultural and pedagogical implications. Pedagogical issues are thus being currently raised such as which and whose English should be taught, who English belongs to, whether the teaching of English should come hand in hand with the teaching of a particular cultural set of values and, if that is the case, which values those should be, among other concerns. In this light, it becomes paramount for teachers of English worldwide to acknowledge the changing status of English, to describe and explore this phenomenon and to discuss its implications in the classroom in order to account for the changes English is facing and may face in the future, and mainly to further enhance and maximise the learning and teaching processes so that they keep pace with current global and cultural linguistic trends. Thus, the aim of this lecture will be to characterise the present status of English as an International Language by placing an emphasis on the discussion of the teaching of English and Culture in EFL and EIL (English as an International Language) contexts in an effort to maximise teaching methods and materials and to make the teaching of English truly relevant to today?s linguistic reality worldwide.
