Resumen:
This handout is intended to be used as part of the English Language II course at the School of Languages, National University of Córdoba, Argentina. It is organized into five chapters: one introductory chapter and four chapters on the different types of essay to be studied during the course, as specified in the English Language II syllabus: expository essay, comparison-contrast essay, cause-effect essay and problem-solution essay. We share the view that language learning is a holistic process that is determined not only by cognitive, but also by social and affective factors, and that it requires the active participation and permanent commitment of all the participants involved (that is, of teachers as well as students). Taking this into account, the activities proposed here have been selected and organized in order to guide and support students? development of the writing ability, which is one of the most complex abilities to be acquired in a foreign language. We hope that students will be able to make the most of the activities presented in this handout as they work to improve their mastery of the English language.
