Resumen:

The last two decades have witnessed a steady growth inresearch on teacher cognition and learner beliefs (see Barcelos, 2003; Borg,2003, 2006). One of the most significant findings of this body of research isthat beliefs play a crucial role in the teaching andlearning processes as they have an impact on the individuals? performance, behaviour and decision-making processes. Richardson (1996) describes beliefs as?psychologically held understandings, premises, or propositions about theworld that are felt to be true? (p. 103). The present study is framed within a largerresearch project which focuses on adolescent and adult learners? beliefs andstrategy use regarding the acquisition of lexis in different classroomsettings. The aim of this paper is to examine adolescent?s perceptions ofvocabulary learning and teaching and establish links between the learners?beliefs and the contextual variable of educational setting. A total of 81adolescent students from two state-run secondary schools, a private school anda language school in the city of Córdoba, Argentina participated in the study. Thelearners? beliefs were elicited by means of a written questionnaireadministered to all the participants. The likert-scale questionnaire consistedof 17 questions, but we will only analyze those concerned with the learners?beliefs. In order to analyze the data, we will seek to find similarities anddifferences between the four groups of students by taking into the accountwhether the learners attend private vs. state institutions or secondary schoolvs. language schools. To conclude, pedagogical and methodological implicationswill be discussed. (251 words)
