ntroduction: Patient safety in critical care areas in hospitals has been analyzed in several studies. In Colombia, there is growing awareness as regards the management of adverse events. This study explores the first stage of this management: the reporting in an intensive care unit of a prototypical private institution. Objective: To assess the reporting of adverse events in a Colombian third level institution, through the estimation of frequency and the categorization of reports. Methodology: A descriptive study regarding the report rate of adverse events was carried out at Clínica de los Andes, in Tunja, during the year 2011 by means of the estimation of frequency and the categorization of reports. The report rate of adverse events was defined as the total number of reports per 1,000 bed-days. We classified events under two categories: major and minor.Results: A total of 383 admissions to the ICU corresponding to 2,374 patient-days were registered. There were 54 adverse events repor
