Resumen:
The aim of the paper is to study the dynamics of integration of migrants into the host region. In particular, the paper studies unemployment dynamics that migrants face when compared to natives – that is, it focus on the exit rates out of unemployment for both natives and migrants, and whether these rates vary with the time spent in the host region. However, and to some extent, surprisingly, according to both Kaplan Meir survival estimates and to the hazard of employment that is obtained by means of the Cox model, there seems to be no difference in terms of hazard of employment between natives and migrants. There is, as well, weak support for a higher hazard of employment for more time spent in the host region. Because of this non-expected result, a panel estimation of a Mincer model was undertaken, to check if the adjustment in the labour market – the “segmentation” in the market- is in the case of Argentina observed in wages instead of being in terms of longer unemployment duration. According to the estimation results, this is the case: in Argentina the wages of migrants are lower than that of natives. Therefore, the whole adjustment in the labour market appears to be in terms of wages and not in unemployment duration.
