Resumen:

The introduction of any research article (RA) plays an important role because it captures -in relatively few words- the main points of a scientific piece of writing. This can ensure the entire paper will be read and/or published. Thus, identifying the generic features of RA introductions has been an area of great interest among linguists. Swales? (1990) Create -A-Research-Space (CARS) model for article introductions has been really enlightening in describing the different moves found in RA introductions. The moves are ?establishing a territory?, ?establishing a niche? and ?occupying the niche?. Each move consists of one or more steps which can take alternative realizations. There have been many studies about the generic structure of RA introductions in different disciplines.  For instance, Swales and Najjar (1987) focused on Physical Science and Psychology. Samraj?s (2002) corpus consisted of RAs from Conservation Biology and wildlife behavior. Habibi (2008) worked on RAs related to ESP, Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics. The corpus of this study consists of 8 research articles related to the field of Linguistics. All of them were published between 1950 and 1955. This paper presents an analysis of their generic structure. The aim of this analysis is to see whether the model proposed by Swales is applicable to these pieces of writing published more than fifty years ago. Preliminary evidence shows there may be differences between what was published in the 1950s and what has been presented in the model. We have attempted to find the reasons for this mismatch and, by doing so, we may show, once again, how reality shapes the way people use language.
