Resumen:
The aim of this chapter is to reflect the practical elegance in the design of synthetic systemsinvolving biocatalysis powered by light or photocatalysis using enzymes. For the practitioner, it iswell known that catalysis plays a key role in organic synthesis, whereby highly valuable targetcompounds are produced in a more economical, energy-saving fashion with the obvious advantageto be more respectful to the environment. In this sense, the development of methodologies, whichtake advantage of features that are specific of each sort of catalysis, ends up being a challengingand fascinating way of thinking in chemistry. Although the photobiocatalysis field is still startingto blossom, the examples chosen here show that the successful combination of light and enzymaticcatalyst is taking very appealing shapes. Moving from sequential processes to enzyme promiscuity,a broad spectrum of systems that are useful in synthetic organic chemistry are presented in detail, glimpsing some novel concepts that may still be fruitfully explored.
