Candida albicans bloodstream infection is frequent form of mycosis with high mortality rates. Beside the new antifungal agents, Amphotericin B(AMPB) and Fluconazole(FLC) are classically used in treatment. Monocytes/macrophages (Mo) play a crucial role in the immune response against this fungus. Mo can be polarized to M1(inflammatory) or M2(alternative) profile in agreement with the differential activation of L-arginine metabolism by iNOS(inducible nitric oxide synthase) and arginase respectively. In this work we evaluated the polarization profile of human monocytes cell line U937 exposed to C.albicans bloodstream isolates(CaBI), and the effects of AMPB and FLC on Mo activation pathways.
