Resumen:
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic widely used in the treatment of intestinal andsystemic parasitosis, which was included in the essential medicines list of the World HealthOrganization. In additon, two desmotropes of the drug have been reported. In this work, new binarysystems of albendazole desmotropes and glutamic acid or aspartic acid were developed andinvestigated. Solid samples were prepared by kneading method and contrasted with physical mixture. It was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrarred spectroscopy, scanningelectron microscopy, thermal analysis and solubility studies. The results obtained showed that thebinary systems significantly incremented the saturation solubility in water and simulated gastric fluidcompared to free desmotropes due several intermolecular H-bonds. In conclusion, the enhancement ofbiopharmaceutical properties evidenced that these amino-acids are promising candidates for thedevelopment of oral formulations for delivery of the albendazole.
