Resumen:
´Determiner´ is not one of the original parts of speech for Greek and Latin (though the former did have ?article?). Most of the words that we now think of as determiners would have come under the pronoun label though the possessives were, for formal reasons, considered to be adjectives in Latin and in early treatments of English. However, determiners are among the most frequent words in the English language. Determiners are a very problematic group of words in a number of ways. The first issue is whether determiners are distinguishable from e.g. pronouns (with which they were conflated in earlier treatments of English). However, it is rare for determiners to receive much attention in language teaching, even in formed-based courses. When they are mentioned, there is a tendency to oversimplification, which can often be misleading and, thus, the noun phrase is completely ignored as they are taught in isolation. Thus, the question is ´Are determiners worth treating in the English class?? Surely the answer depends greatly on what level we are operating on.
