An albumin serum based nanoparticle (BSA NP) was obtained for antitumoral treatmentswhile conjugated with a potential anticancer drug Emodin. It was possible to characterise theBSA NP as a spherical nanosized (20 ? 70 nm) reproducible with high Emodin affinity,preserving its functionality as a drug carrier.The bioconjugate proved to affect the metabolic activity and cell mortality of breast (MCF-7)and prostate (PC-3) cancer cell lines when compared to BSA NP. In order to deep-discussthe nanoparticle as a potential drug delivery system, activation of the cell immune responsesystem is being studied. So far, the nanoparticle have proved to generate a similar effect onthe cell as its monomer does.As regards in vivo toxicity the bioconjugate present only mild phenotypic alterations inZebrafish larvae in concentrations such as µM (Emodin) and nM (BSA NP). Also, no manifestcardiotoxicity was found as well as any alteration in animal behaviour. When tested againstex vivo red blood cells, no haemolytic activity was found.Data obtained described the BSA NP as a suitable nanodelivery system for toxic antitumoraldrugs such as Emodin, maintaining the original molecular properties of the protein butenhancing its delivery features.
