Resumen:
Resistance (R) proteins are key sensors of the plant immune system, conferring resistance to diseases caused by pathogens. These immune receptors have been found to act from several compartments inside the cell. However, R proteins have never been described as functioning from plastids, which are essential organelles for a successful defense response. Here, we present microscopy and subcellular fractionation evidence indicating that an NBS-LRR class R protein localizes to plastids envelope. We also show that the overexpression of targeting-effected mutant versions induces plastids to cluster around nuclei, a hallmark for triggered defenses. Consistent with this, preliminary results indicate that KO mutant plants for this R protein are more susceptible to infections. Together, our data suggest that this immune sensor closely participate in organelle-associated defense responses. Possible function(s) for plastid located R proteins will be discussed.
