his book aptly re-cycles the concepts and systems developed by systemic functional linguistics (SFL) in the work of Halliday (1985) and his followers, particularly Martin (1992), with a focus on ?discourse semantics rather than on lexicogrammar, genre or register? (p. 242) as it gets deployed in written texts ? and makes such concepts accessible to students and researchers who are starting out with SFL. It begins with a brief discussion of the SFL perspectives on discourse: the three metafunctions of language (interpersonal, ideational and textual), the three levels of language (grammar, discourse and context), and the discourse systems that realise the metafunctions. Then, the authors move on to a richly illustrated presentation of the resources for realizing meanings (appraisal, ideation, conjunctions, identification and tracking), in other words, chapters 2 to 6 gradually build up the technical tool kit for analysing discourse in the SFL paradigm.
