his book aptly re-cycles the concepts and systems developed by systemic functional linguistics (SFL) in the work of Halliday (1985) and his followers, particularly Martin (1992), with a focus on ?discourse semantics rather than on lexicogrammar, genre or register? (p. 242) as it gets deployed in written texts ? and makes such concepts accessible to students and researchers who are starting out with SFL. It begins with a brief discussion of the SFL perspectives on discourse: the three metafunctions of language (interpersonal, ideational and textual), the three levels of language (grammar, discourse and context), and the discourse systems that realise the metafunctions.
