Iron, ruthenium, aluminum, and their anhydrous bromides were used as catalysts for dehydrobromination of 1,2-dibromo-l,l-diphenylethanien carbon tetrachloride solutions to give 2-bromo-1,l-diphenylethene. Organometallic species formed on the surface of the solid catalysts moved into the solution and were detected spectroscopically. The reactivity of the studied catalyst was A1 < AlBr3 = Ru < RuBr2 < FeBr2 = FeBr3 = Fe.
