osa, A. L., Haedo, S. D., Temporini, E. D., Borioli,G. A., and Mautino, M. R. 1997. Mapping chromosomelandmarks in the centromere I region of Neurosporacrassa. Fungal Genetics and Biology 21, 315?322.Chromosome translocation breakpoints, RFLP heterozygosityin partial chromosome duplications, and RFLPmarkedcrossover events have been used as chromosomallandmarks to find the position and orientation ofcloned regions flanking centromere I of Neurosporacrassa. Determination of physical:genetic ratios ingenomic regions flanking the loci mei-3, un-2, andhis-2 supports previous evidence indicating that recombinationalactivity is lower in regions flanking centromereI than in the general N. crassa genome. Thehomogeneous distribution of crossover events found inthese regions suggests that there is not a gradient ofcrossover inhibition in the vicinity of centromere I.Thus, a largely extended cent
