Resumen:
Refractiveerrorsaffectalargeproportionofthegeneralpopulationandmaybehighlyhandicapping.MostofepidemiologicalstudieshavebeenconductedinAsia,EuropeandU.S.A.,1-3butinArgentinainformationonthismatterisscarce.Onestudyhasevaluatedtheprevalenceofrefractiveerrorsinanurbanoffice-workerspopulation,4butnopublisheddataisavailableconcerningruralpopulations. AstigmatismwasfoundtobethemostcommonrefractiveerrorinthispopulationofthenorthwestregionoftheArgentinePatagonia.Thishighprevalencecouldbeprincipallyrelatedtoenvironmentalfactorssuchasconstantwindscarryingsandandclaysoilparticlesthatinduceaforcedhalf-closeofeyelidswiththeconsequentlidpressureonthecornea.Ethnicandgeneticfactors,aswellasmalnutritionmayalsocontributetothishighprevalence.5,6
Thegeneralprevalenceofmyopiawaslow.Itwasmorefrequentlyobservedinwomen,generallyinvolvedinknittingandtissuemanufacturingfromlambwool,incontrastwithmenthatperformoutdooractivities.Epidemiologicalstudieshaveshownthatthedevelopmentofmyopiaispositivelyrelatedwitheducationallevelandnearvisionuse.1,2
FurtherstudiesmustbeconductedinordertoassessthesignificanceofrefractiveerrorsaffectingotherruralpopulationsfromdifferentregionsinArgentinathatarefrequentlymarginalizedfromnationalhealthpolicies.
