Resumen:
In this paper, I will compare and contrast the theme of loneliness in two contemporary novels: Graham Swift?s Waterland (1983) and Jane Smiley?s A Thousand Acres (1991). My argument is that although there is no psychological or sociological evidence to support the fact that people who live in isolated places tend to feel more or less lonely than people who live in overcrowded cities, the flatness of the landscape in the above mentioned texts intensifies the feelings of loneliness of the characters. Such feelings bring about tragic consequences: murder, incest, suicide, abortion, madness and heavy drinking.
