Resumen:
The aim of this presentation is to propose the application of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in bilingual secondary school milieus in Argentina. This approach can help students learning a content subject in English such as History or Biology read critically and write effectively. Explicit teaching about language (genre, grammar and discourse) as an integral part of a content syllabus will definitely help learners develop both their critical orientation and their writing skills. In other words, understanding how language is used to construct meanings will help students see not only what is being emphasized, for what purpose and from whose perspective but also how all this can be accomplished.
