A comment on teachers' salaries in Argentina and other Latin American countries

The purpose of the study is to apply a comparative perspective to comment new results on the salary of the teachers and other workers in eight Latin American countries where educational reforms have been introduced in the last few years. It is concluded that in Latin America teachers earn more than average workers in the economy. However, it is crucial to define who is "the average worker", since teachers' education and experience differ from thos of the average worker. The returns of schooling among teachers from different countries in the sample seem to converge to a common value of about 5% per year, lower than the return obtained by any comparable worker with no less than 15 years of schooling.
