This entry addresses current trends in EFL materials in Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. Characteristics of local and localized materials are first described and trends in materials design in Argentina and Uruguay are then discussed. Furthermore, the presence of genres and the development of literacies in EFL materials are considered according to the Brazilian perspective. We emphasize the importance of textbooks as fundamental tools for the teaching of English as a second or a foreign language, adding that where resources seem to be limited, the reliance on materials has increasingly become part of teachers´ routines.
