Resumen:
The talk aims to present a model of material s design for the development of a plurilingual competence in a secondary school setting in Argentina. The learners are native speakers of Spanish, have acquired an elementary competence in English (A2) and are learning German as a second foreign language (A1 level). The material s are to be used in a class shared by both teachers and focus on the topic of the typical Argentine custom of asados and the (near) equivalents "barbecue" and German "Grillen". The aim of the material s is to confront the learners through pictures and written texts in both languages with these activities in English and German-speaking settings and to compare these with the learners' own customs. Since both English and German are foreign languages in Argentina, learners are trained to mediate between both foreign languages and Spanish as well as between the three cultures, thus fostering their cultural awareness and their role as plurilingual mediators between English, German and Spanish-speaking people. For example, the presence of foreign visitors in Argentina interacting with Argentines requires the learners' ability to mediate in the conversations whereby these have to decode and encode simple messages, usually about the country and its customs.
