Resumen:
In this paper we present the findings of a research in progress aiming at analyzing, characterizing and categorizing practice activities. This presupposes a lesson format model divided into stages such as PPP which stresses the sequencing of activities from controlled to freer practice towards the autonomous use of lingustic elements. Drawing on current views on second language acquisition and ESL methodology, we discuss its merits and limitations which, despite substantial criticism in the last years, still has wide acceptance among second language teachers. We then present the various alternatives to the PPP model proposed by different ELT and SLA specialists.
