From Input to output: The role of consciousness-raising activities

In this paper we present partial findings of a research in progress whose purpose is to analyze, characterize and categorize practice activities. We intend to focus on Consciousness-Raising activities, activities that do not necessarily require any immediate output  but that raise the learner´s awareness of particular aspects of the input. Current research highlights the positive impact of reflection on form has on learners´ interlanguage development. First we discuss the theoretical issues backing CR-activities and secondly, based on the typology devised by Nitta and Gardner (2005) we will analyse the types of CR activities included in a selection of beginner coursebooks.
