This paper aims at helping teachers of adult Spanish-speaking EFL learners who want their students to acquire high-level literacy skills and, in particular, the ability to read. It also aims to familiarize EFL teachers with the latest reading models, raise consciousness among EFL teachers about the importance of giving their students the necessary tools to understand different texts and generes, and to show instructors how to exploit reading activities provided in textbooks so as to help their students construct meaning from reading.
