Resumen:
REPRODUCING INDUSTRIALSETTINGS IN THE CLASSROOM Translation memories integrated incomputer-assisted tools (CAT) have become an essential part of professionaltranslators? workstation since the ?90s. Today, all a translator needs is anInternet connection: most CAT tools, resources (such as specialized dictionaries),clients? requests and deliveries, payments and communication are handleddigitally stores and computed ?in the cloud?. Institutions, mainly in Europe, which are more technologically inclined have accommodated their highereducation programs to introduce students to these and other challenges thatcould emerge in a translator?s professional environment. In our institution, wehave decided to go down that road by introducing the use of open source CATtools and distributed translation memories managed with the well-known controlversion system Git. During the academic year the students play the role of aprofessional translator by delving into the world of cloud based translationmemories. The challenge was to find an open source CAT tool that could beseamlessly integrated with a cloud-based system in which the translation memorywas to be stored. After much testing, it was decided that a Git repository wasgoing to be used in communion with the OmegaT CAT tool. This was a challengenot only for students but also for the teaching staff of The school oflanguages and FAMAF universities as we put this rarely used system intopractice. This presentation will describe the technologies implemented in theclassroom environment and the reason why it is so important for the students tobe able to handle multi-level technological tools.
