Our day and age has brought about an interest in voices which for years were silenced. These voices were suddenly given center stage. Postcolonial drama is a key example. However, we know that the literary translation of drama presents varied problems that are especially complex to solve. This paper will explore the importance of preserving the colloquial quality of Postcolonial plays giving particular emphasis to dialectal, idiolectal, and lexical problems, and considering the areas of characterization and consistency throughout a play in the context of literatures where cultural equivalences may be inexistent in the target language. Works ranging in origin from the American Harlem Renaissance (such as Eugene O?Neill), to apartheid South Africa (such as Athol Fugard) to the mid-XX century Caribbean (such as Derek Walcott) to contemporary India (such as Manjula Padmahabhan) will prove to be key examples in this analysis.
