A translator and a translation scholar must necessarily engage in dialogue so that the former has access to technical explanations of his everyday labor, and the latter can anchor his reflections on the practice of translation (Arrizabalaga, 2012a, 2013 in preparation). This article has three purposes. Firstly, I seek to provide a definition of dialogue in Translation Studies connected with the periodization of the discipline; in this sense of the term, dialogue can help explain the succession of translation schools and models which have dominated the disciplinary arena all through the 20th c. Thus, a selection of schools and models will be described and accompanied by a succession of arguments against their approaches. The pieces of criticism were posed by schools and models which were in their day striving for acceptance in the Translation Studies global arena; such arguments will be quoted from Anthony Pym´s Exploring Translation Theories (2010).
