Resumen:
This paper presents reading aloud as an activity with a primarily social role. Reading aloud is discussed in terms of the theoretical framework of discourse intonation developed in Brazil et. al (1980) and the taxonomy of paralinguistic features proposed by Brown (1990). Pedagogic suggestions are made as to how to combine prosodic and paralinguistic features to perform an interactive reading task. Strategies that help learners understand the communicative value of reading aloud are discussed.
