Resumen:
This paper describes an analysis method to identify the thematic organization of a lecture. In a preliminary study, extracts of two lectures delivered by British linguists in Argentina were audiotaped and analysed following Brazil´s theory of discourse intonation (1985) and Barr´s concept of sequence chain (1990) to examine the function of intonation in signalling topic organization.
Results indicate that intonation seems to provide a cue for the identification of topic shift and that the combination of both methods may lead to an effective model of analysis of lecture content structure.
