Resumen:
When learning a foreign language, knowledge of appropriate language behaviour includes knowledge of the phonological system of the Target Language. This is why to achieve a high performance level of pronunciation has been the ultimate objective since the beginning of pronunciation training in first year. The exercises in this handbook are organized in four different sections: phonemic adjustments, word stress and intonation (prominence and tones). All of them include guided and freer practical work that aims at reinforcing the contents of the different units in the syllabus. Constant reference to the sources used to organize the information in all the sections is made in order to encourage you to explore reference materials and expand on the data included here. Although the focus throughout the year will be on the contents mentioned above, it is worth mentioning that accurate production of the sounds of the English phonological system will also be considered of outstanding importance to achieve the objectives set for the subject. This material is also expected to help you continue developing certain strategies that may prove useful for an EFL learner and future professional of the language: using a dictionary, self-monitoring, self-assessment and peer correction, among others. We hope that this handbook helps you improve your overall oral performance in such a way that you become a more confident speaker as well as a more proficient language user.
