Resumen:
We have designed the present material for our students’ in-class and out-of-class work taking special note of both groups of students: the ones who are naturally inclined to enjoy art-related content and the ones who would also do so, if they could only overcome the initial obstacle of feeling afraid, shy, or utterly frustrated by the misconception that a person has to be in command of “highbrow” knowledge before they can approach or experience art on a personal level. We have addressed the needs of the former by including listening and reading texts which deal with a variety of perspectives on the topics of music and painting, as well as material which presents or describes original, engaging, unusual, and controversial ways of creating and experiencing art. We have addressed the needs of the latter through a two-fold approach. We have provided student-friendly background information about significant artistic movements and styles, the life and work of famous artists of all time, and such fundamental aspects as the medium, tools, and techniques of two of humanity’s most highly treasure fine arts: music and painting. Additionally, we have designed activities and tasks which can dispel the myth that students who do not have enough intellectual knowledge about the arts cannot articulate a personal or spontaneous reaction. Such activities will involve all students alike in a multiplicity of collaborative tasks in which they will be able to share and allay their fears, learn from one another, and construct their knowledge following individual pathways.
