Resumen:
This handout is intended to be used as part of the English Language II course at the School of Languages, National University of Córdoba, Argentina. It is organized into seven chapters ?a brief reference to the short story as a literary genre, and one chapter for each of the short stories to be read during the course: ?My Greatest Ambition,? ?English as a Second Language,? ?Roman Fever,? ?The Legacy,? ?Sea Story,? and ?The Way up to Heaven.? We share the view that language learning is a holistic process that is determined not only by cognitive, but also by social and affective factors, and that it requires the active participation and permanent commitment of all the participants involved (that is, of teachers as well as students). Taking this into account, the activities proposed here have been selected and organized in order to guide and support students? reading of authentic literary texts. We hope that students will be able to make the most of the activities presented in this handout as they work to improve their mastery of the English language.
